Up
Pixar has come out with a lot of content over the years and some movies have really grabbed audiences’ attention. Up definitely caught people’s eyes.
Of course, it was praised for the usual Pixar charm. On top of that, many found the story of Carl and his wife touching and it even brought a tear to many people’s eyes. As for this Pixar fan, they just couldn’t relate to all the hype.
Gravity
If you ask critics, it’s hard to go wrong with the movie Gravity. By the numbers, it wasn’t just one of the most critically-acclaimed sci-fi titles in recent years but offered the biggest box office hit for both leads.
For this person, it wasn’t one of their favorite movies, to say the least. They namely blamed the fact that the movie relied too heavily on those successful leads, Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, to make up for a lacking story.
The Dark Knight Rises
When it comes to Batman, the Caped Crusader has seen many forms over the years. When The Dark Knight trilogy came out, it gave us a grittier hero on the big screen.
After the previous entry in the series, simply titled The Dark Knight, this fan was left wanting more from The Dark Knight Rises. In all fairness, Heath Ledger’s depiction of the Joker really left fans with sky-high expectations for anything that followed.
The Hangover
The Hangover came out in 2009 and it didn’t take long for it to reach incredible popularity. It even ranked as the ninth-highest-grossing film of the year.
Comedy is fickle, though, and some people are bound not to laugh. After hearing all the hype around the movie, this person was ready to be blown away. Instead, they found that the film only solicited a chuckle or two rather than the roaring laughter they’d heard about.
Ghostbusters
There are some films that are bound to stay on people’s minds for decades and you can tell right after they come out. That was the feeling around the original Ghostbusters’ release.
While many fans had strong opinions about the reboot, this person just doesn’t understand the hype around the original. It sounds particularly disappointing that this person waited in line for the movie and it doesn’t sound like they got the seats they preferred for the experience either.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
The ’80s brought about a few movies that are still remembered decades later. One of the bigger titles from this period is Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. To many, the movie seemed like a bit of a teenage dream.
After all, who doesn’t want to blow off school and have a day outwitting authority? On the other hand, not everyone found the titular character all that relatable or even likable, which in turn, took them out of the movie.
Deadpool
Deadpool was wildly successful when it debuted in theaters. It was often praised for shaking up the usual superhero script, bringing a long-loved character to real life on screen, and, of course, Ryan Reynolds’ casting.
Marvel fans were looking forward to it, too, especially after the treatment the character was given in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. At least this fan didn’t pay for a ticket in theaters given how much they disagreed with the rave reviews for the movie.
The Shawshank Redemption
The Shawshank Redemption, based on Stephen King’s Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, came to the big screen in 1994. The film was widely liked upon its release and it still receives praise decades later.
It even has the most Academy Awards for a Stephen King adaptation of which there are plenty. This person has some noteworthy criticism for the famous title and they weren’t the only one to express such concerns.
The Godfather
When it comes to talking about classic movies, you’re bound to hear The Godfather come up. The 1972 movie has a whopping 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is no small feat!
As for this person, they have better uses for their time. They concede that the movie is good. However, they’re taken out of it by how dull the film series is when rewatching it. We’re sure the nearly three-hour runtime of the first movie helps either.
The Notebook
When The Notebook came out in 2004, it didn’t take long for the movie to garner a following. Many praised its romantic storyline. Not everyone felt the same, though.
While some were caught up in the cinematography alongside Rachel McAdams’ and Ryan Goslings’ performances, others found the story disappointing. Like this person, some even found the storyline more problematic than endearing. All in all, it’s a movie people tend to have strong opinions on.
John Wick
Action films usually either really stand out or just don’t really take off. John Wick definitely managed to achieve commercial success. The action-packed movie and its subsequent sequels see Keanu Reeves as the titular character.
This person said the engaging action scenes weren’t enough to save pretty much every other part of the movie. They found everything from the story to the acting lacking, leaving them wondering why everyone spoke so highly of the film.
Inception
Inception was a Christopher Nolan science fiction piece released in 2010. It features a famous cast too including talents like Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael Caine, Marion Cotillard, and Elliot Page.
The movie spent a lot of energy and time on cinematography as well as the script, making the end result rather memorable. Plus, it was well-received upon its release as well. Rather than artistic, this Reddit user found the movie more than a bit pretentious and more complex than it was worth.
Dunkirk
Dunkirk came out in 2017 and focuses on World War II, specifically the invasion of Dunkirk. The film was highly praised for its artistic approach and even took home plenty of awards.
One part of this approach was limiting the dialogue in the movie. This was a move that not everyone loved, including this Reddit user. They found the approach interesting but thought the final result fell short of what the movie could have conveyed.
The Lord of the Rings
There are some movies that seem universally loved at first glance but it’s partly their overwhelming popularity that gives them this appearance.
Apparently, even a movie as popular as The Lord of the Rings has left a few viewers unimpressed. While this person didn’t have too many complaints about the more action-packed scenes, it was all the time in-between them that left this person yawning rather than hanging onto the edge of their seat.
A Quiet Place
As far as modern horror movies go, A Quiet Place was incredibly popular upon its release. It received nominations for a variety of aspects and was followed by a sequel.
Even a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes isn’t perfect and here’s one horror fan who disagrees. Their argument is that the film boils down to another monster movie but doesn’t quite live up to some other famous titles in their eyes. “Creature features” are generally quite a popular trope in the genre, though.
The Lion King
Disney has been around for a while and some of its movies have seen a sharp decline in popularity as time has gone on. On the contrary, some movies are still considered a classic like The Lion King.
Opinions aren’t universal, though, and this Reddit user never saw the hype for the movie. Maybe their kids will lean more towards another Disney movie and spare them the suffering.

Avatar
When Avatar came out, it broke records at the box office. However, the actual quality of the movie has come into question over the years. First of all, this person conceded that the movie was a technical feat.
It showed a use of CGI that looked great, especially compared to its contemporaries in 2009. It was the plot of the movie that left this person wondering what all the hype was about when they finally saw the movie.
Uncut Gems
Most people don’t think of crime thrillers when they think of Adam Sandler’s work. Yet, that’s exactly what Uncut Gems offers.
The reviews were relatively good for the movie, too — Rotten Tomatoes marks it with an approval rating of 92%. However, it’s hard to get into a movie and root for the protagonist if you aren’t a huge fan of the main character which was exactly how this person felt about Sandler’s character.
The Expendables
The 2010 movie The Expendables features just about every action star you can think of. This included Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Steve Austin, and Jason Statham just to name a few.

Many found the movie entertaining if nothing else, but some couldn’t quite look past how heavily this movie leaned on action over plot, propping it all up with some of the biggest names in the genre.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood centered on a story about Hollywood in 1969. Coming out in 2019, the cast included stars like Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Margot Robbie.

Captain America: Civil War
Lately, it seems rare that a Marvel movie doesn’t perform well. So, it’s no surprise that fans were excited for and impressed by Captain America: Civil War.
By the numbers, the movie was successful enough to become one of the highest-grossing films of the year in 2016. On the other hand, this person found the stakes a little too low and the plot a bit too loose to live up to their expectations.
Diehard
As far as action movies go, some have really managed to stick out over the years. At this point, few people haven’t seen or at least heard of Die Hard.
For its place as a classic choice in the action genre, this person just couldn’t see why everyone was so excited about the Bruce Willis flick. With such wild popularity, it’s easy to see how someone who wasn’t a fan would find it overrated.
Fight Club
Fight Club was a 1999 adaptation of a novel by the same name. With Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, and Helena Bonham Carter at the helm, it quickly took off.
Even long after the movie came out, it’s still often recommended and cited for its deeper message. The only problem for this person was that the deep meaning the movie was trying to go for didn’t feel very natural at all. Trying to force the deeper meaning didn’t work for this watcher.
A Star Is Born
When A Star Is Born was brought back to the silver screen again in 2018, Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga were at the helm.
The movie quickly became a hit and the movie even managed to earn eight Academy Award nominations. Not to mention, the soundtrack was wildly successful as well. As for this person, the film simply seemed a little off and the cinematography really took them out of it.
Pulp Fiction
When it comes to cult classics, the term brings a few titles to mind right away. This includes Pulp Fiction among the forerunners.
The Tarantino movie features plenty of stars and took home awards including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Additionally, the actors involved won their own accolades as well. For all of the hype surrounding the movie, this person was simply unimpressed with what they saw.
The Wizard of Oz
There are some movies that seem to stick around forever after their release. The Wizard of Oz has definitely solidified its place in Hollywood history.

Joker
Anyone who plays the Joker has huge shoes to fill. From Jack Nicholson to Heath Ledger, some really great actors have stepped into the role, setting the bar high. As such, all eyes were on Joaquin Phoenix when Joker was announced.

Hereditary
Hereditary is another horror movie that received critical acclaim upon its release. It won plenty of awards, pleasing both horror fans at the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards and more.
This horror fan wasn’t left shivering in their seat, though. All in all, they were confused for a lot of the movie and couldn’t figure out what was so scary about it. Still, they couldn’t help but praise Midsommar for the experience it offered.
Frozen
It was hard to miss Frozen when it came out. Even for a Disney title, it was massively popular. It seemed everywhere you go, you’d see something themed after the movie.
As far as Disney movies go, this person wasn’t impressed. However, it’s their claim of unoriginality that really stands out here. When the movie was initially released, many shared the opposite opinion about the movie, finding it new and refreshing.
American Psycho
American Psycho is far from the only famous title in Christian Bale’s repertoire. The chilling character with a sadistic streak remains memorable, however.
The movie tends to be one that some people love and others really don’t see the appeal in. While this person didn’t dislike watching American Psycho, they found that it just wasn’t as good as everyone hyped it up to be. They didn’t hate it, it just wasn’t revolutionary.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
As we said earlier, most Marvel movies are well-anticipated and well-received anymore. This can make the ones you don’t like particularly disappointing.
After the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, fans were ready for the second one. According to this fan, it just didn’t live up to expectations either. In fact, they seemed to have a problem with almost every aspect of the sequel they’d been waiting for.
Citizen Kane
If you ask about the greatest movie of all time, you’ll probably hear many a movie buff turn towards the classic choice: Citizen Kane.
If you jump over to Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has a 99% rating and it boasts a clean 100% on MetaCritic. Yet, these opinions aren’t as universal as those numbers might make them seem. This person thought the movie was boring and they’re far from the only ones to have voiced the same opinion.
Eragon
Eragon was another title that had a high bar to clear. Before the movie came out, the book had already cultivated quite a fanbase.
When the movie came out, as with many book-to-movie adaptations, many fans found that it was lacking. This particular Reddit user criticized the movie stating that even a talented cast couldn’t save the adaptation. It seems that a lot of fans were actually in agreement on this one, despite the popularity of the book.
The Blair Witch Project
Back when The Blair Witch Project came out, it was more revolutionary than it might seem to a new viewer today. This was primarily thanks to the fact that it pioneered the “found footage” style of horror movies.
However, the genre now is one that people tend to love or hate. As for this person, the classic horror film just didn’t capture their interest but they conceded on its originality.
E.T.
There are some movies you see when you’re young that you never forget. Maybe they hold a special place in your heart of nostalgia.
In this person’s case, it might just be a memory of having to sit through one of the longest movies of their life. If it isn’t a movie you like, we can see how it would start to drag on. No one wants to spend two hours watching a movie they don’t like.
Wonder Woman
While Marvel tends to take center stage a lot, DC doesn’t shy away from giving us hit superhero movies either. Who could forget heroes like Superman or Batman?
Bringing a leading lady to the screen, Gal Gadot portrays Wonder Woman in the movie of the same name. For the most part, the picture impressed audiences and solidified Gadot’s role as the current Wonder Woman. Some people just weren’t a fan of the heroine.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
A lot of romance movies tend to follow the same general formula. The romance depicted in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World was a little different.
Namely, the concept that the titular character must battle his romantic interest’s seven evil exes. The movie quickly took off, garnering itself a status as a cult classic. Even though many people find the movie goes quickly, some seem to disagree with the concept.
Momento
In 2000, Christopher Nolan came out with Momento, a mystery with a unique twist. The broken narrative has helped the film stand out even years later.
If critical reviews weren’t enough, the movie took home plenty of awards as well and it’s been preserved in the National Film Registry. According to this person, the artistry took center stage while the story wasn’t all that impressive. In fact, they found the story so lacking they were ready to dub the film overrated.
The Shining
When it comes to horror, there are some titles almost every fan will recognize. This includes the Stanley Kubrick film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining.
If you don’t find a horror movie scary at all, though, we can see how it would be disappointing. Today, it’s considered a classic but King fans often criticize how much it varies from the source material. King himself has stated the movie was great in imagery but not so much as an adaptation of his novel.
The Wolf of Wall Street
It was hard to miss news of The Wolf of Wall Street when it came out. Not only was it a highly-rated movie but many were excited to see the cast come together as well.

The Hunger Games
After The Hunger Games came out it was so successful it ushered in more than a sequel. It was part of a surge of dystopian stories for young adults brought to the big screen.
Unfortunately, not every entry to the trope was as great as the last. This person found almost every entry underwhelming, however. From The Hunger Games to Divergent to Maze Runner it seems like they found the whole genre overrated.
Paddington
Plenty of childhood characters from the past have been reimagined in recent years. In 2014, Paddington Bear was the star of his own movie titled Paddington.
When the movie was released in the U.K., it enjoyed two solid weeks dominating the box office and ranked third upon its U.S. release. As for this person, they weren’t too impressed. While they conceded that it could be a great movie for kids, they weren’t sure why adults were all that interested.
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy
Will Ferrell has been in a variety of comedies over the years. Not every fan finds each entry in his repertoire as impressive or entertaining as the last, though.
For this Will Ferrell fan, it was Anchorman that fell short of their expectations. This seems at odds with a movie that managed to open second only to Spider-Man 2 the weekend it hit theaters in the United States.
Ender’s Game
Ender’s Game had a lot to live up to when the movie premiered. After all, movies based on books often come with high expectations.
When it opened in North America, the results were promising and the movie stayed in the number one spot for a week. Compared to the book, this fan wasn’t impressed with the buildup. It’s hard to put everything in the hundreds of pages of a novel in a single movie.
We all love movies. When done well, they can move us to tears, leave us in stitches with laughter, or even really leave you pondering them for a while. However, even the most critically-acclaimed and monetarily successful movies have those who simply aren’t fans. These are some of the spiciest opinions about popular movies people have shared.
